Hershey who was born approx January 2012. Hershey is a very playful, energetic puppy, neutered, housebroken, and super affectionate and sweet. Hershey LOVES, LOVES, LOVES....Toys! He also loves to eat, cuddle, play, go on short walks, and play with the other dogs. Hershey is a petite little guy weighing just 13 pounds.
He was a stray that was picked up by the shelter after they received a call that he had been hit by a car and was injured. X-rays revealed a displaced humerus. Hershey remained at the shelter for 30 days with this injury, waiting for someone to come and rescue him but nobody ever came to claim him. Due to Hershey's injury and for his safety, he was not able to be placed in the regular kennels with other dogs and was segregated to the kennels in the shelter's medical area which the general public is not able to enter without assistance, which greatly reduced his chances of getting adopted. ARV happened to be in the shelter's medical facility looking at another dog when we noticed Hershey standing against the metal cage, pressing himself up against the cage, wagging his tail and begging to be touched and loved....he was literally smiling at us when we finally went over to see him. We knew his time was up and we had to make a quick decision to save Hershey but also needed to raise the funds to pay for the very expensive surgery which was in excess of $3,000. Through the generous support of many people and organizations, we were able to raise the money for Hershey to finally get the surgery he so desperately needed to repair his arm and return him back to a happy, thriving little puppy. ARV rescued Hershey from the shelter on 7/26/12, and the very next day he went for surgery to repair his broken humerus. The veterinarian had to place a pin in his arm along with an external fixator to help stabilize the bone while it was healing. It would be 9 long weeks before Hershey could have the pin and external fixator removed, and Hershey has made a full recovery! His arm is healed and he is walking beautifully again thanks to the wonderful medical care of the orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery. He is fully functional and full of energy after having to be crated for the better part of his 9 week recovery.
Stop by and meet our pets on Saturdays from noon to 4pm near the groomers in the PetSmart store in Simi Valley, except holiday weekends. Please email ahead to make sure a particular pet will be at adoptions.
